Summary of the findings:

This project is an attempt to the development of signal processing tool for the quantitative evaluation of the effect of pranayama on the health of pulmonary system.

Introduction explains the importance of yoga in daily life, and the benefits  attained through the regular practice of the same. The importance of pranayama and the effect of pranayama  to human body mainly the pulmonary health.

Review of literature provides the theoretical background to the study. Investigations and studies done by various  people was very helpful for this research.

The main ‘objective’ of this project is to analyze the effect of pranayama on the state of respiratory system, with the assistance of a signal processing tool. The central idea behind this project is to evaluate the influence of pranayama on the pulmonary health through lung sound analysis, with the help of a low cost generalized protocol of signal processing known as MATLAB

Methodology explains the use of MATLAB for the quantitative  evaluation of the effect of prayayama on the health of pulmonary system. 50 volunteers were selected and Pranayama training for duration of one hour per week for six months was offered. Thus in a week, 3 days are to be utilized for pranayama. Acquisition of lung sound during the course of training was done per week. Mel-cepstrum is used for the analysis of Lung Sounds to characterize the state of the respiratory system. Acquisition of the lung sounds and their analysis is done in MATLAB. Eventually the results are correlated with, ABG and pulse oximetry.

The result shows that the oxygen saturation and the partial pressure of oxygen are continuously increasing as the day’s progress. It is noticed that the CO2 contents in the blood reduces as the day’s progress. The airway consolidations are reduced because of pranayama. As a result, the spurious high frequency components in the respiratory sound get suppressed because of the average value of MFCC (k) that gradually reduces, with the progressing of the days. Hence the analysis of the respiratory sounds through the Mel cepstrum is useful for analyzing the efficacy of the pranayama. Apart from this, the observation is a clear indication that the Pranayama is helpful for improving the pulmonary health.

As a conclusion it is emphasized that pranayama is not a simple breathing exercise, yet it is a scientific breathing process where control over prana is achieved. The quantitative evaluation of the effect of pranayama on the health of pulmonary system is attained through MATLAB
